Ambit Reviews: Energy Efficient Cooking

It’s June and the heat is on! Many regions across the U.S. are experiencing high humidity along with soaring temperatures. This sweltering heat makes summer cooking even more of a chore.

What’s a family to do? Going out to eat every day isn’t budget friendly, and pizza will lose its pizazz if ordered daily. Instead, check out these ideas for great summer cooking. After all, you know what they say about the heat in the kitchen.

Cool Summer Cooking

  • Snazzy Salads: There’s little to no interior heat required for this energy-efficient summer dining option. Summer is a great time to invest in fresh local foods. Many cities have farmer’s markets where you can buy fresh fruits, veggies and in some areas, meat and fish.Start a new Meatless Monday tradition with creative salads. Or grill some hearty vegetables alongside fish and meats to add to your fresh garden bowls. Moving the heat to the grill keeps inside temps down.
  • Meal Prep: Meal preparation is great for many reasons, including what it does for the body and budget. Plan a weekend where you decide to prepare many meals, and then freeze them once the dishes cool. When you’re ready to eat a particular meal, thaw and use the microwave for warming. These meals tend to keep your kitchen cool and summer cooking tasty.
  • Preheat with Precision: For your savory or sweet baked dishes, shorten the preheat time for your oven. Instead of starting it up when you begin to prep and letting it heat the whole time, set a timer. Many ovens give a signal once up to temperature. Bake, broil and roast for the designated time, then turn it off quickly. Keep the kitchen cool by leaving the oven off as long as possible.
  • Slow Cooker: Using smaller appliances instead of stoves or ovens is a great way to a cooler kitchen. Slow cookers are a great example. They do require some meal prep, so plan ahead.  Be sure to use the appliance wisely, not too close to the wall or under a low cabinet.

So use these tips to stay cool, relax with a cold beverage and make meals fun again all summer long.
